Gerty Faith is a survivor — and she is just getting started.
At 14 years old, this petite black pug queen came to us under the most heartbreaking of circumstances. Her previous owner brought her to a vet seeking euthanasia, citing dementia and a lack of quality of life. But that veterinarian looked at Gerty, saw a spark still burning, and bravely refused. Instead, they reached out to Appalachian Pug Rescue — and within hours, one of our dedicated foster heroes drove a seven-hour round trip to bring her to safety.
Gerty had been living with untreated dry eye (KCS) since 2019, leaving her eyes red and uncomfortable, and she arrived with severe ear infections. But the road to healing has already begun. She is now on eye medications and soothing supplements, and she has had her first official APR vet visit — with an encouraging report. We are awaiting her bloodwork results, the first labs ever run in her 14 years of life, and have scheduled a referral to a veterinary ophthalmologist to address her KCS and check for potential glaucoma.
Despite everything, Gerty’s spirit is unbreakable. She is spending her golden years learning what true, unconditional love feels like — and if the photos of her lounging by the water are any indication, she is taking to it beautifully.
She proved everyone wrong. Now it’s our turn to make sure her beautiful new chapter is everything she deserves.
